A House

We can conceptualize our inner world as a house. Our body is the house of our Inner Child, and our Inner Child is not just one thing, but is multidimensional, existing on the level of emotion, bodily sensation, thought, imagination, and memory. Our house has a life of its own and we enter it as it is. We greet what's in front of us, which is perhaps what Jesus was referring to in the Gospel of Thomas when he said, “Know what's in front of your face.” To know is to love.

We take time to connect with ourselves. We tune in and get a sense of what is wanting attention in the moment. We acknowledge what's there with openness and curiosity, and if we struggle to do this we seek God for support. We may express to God what feels scary about facing what's in front of us, and by getting honest we face our fears. The door more readily opens and we are free to walk inside.

There are many rooms in the house of our inner world and it's not something we can explore all at once. It may take years to learn what is in the rooms and to feel comfortable in those rooms. And the house may change as we change. But once we discover this house and know it as ours then we’ll have finally found what we’ve been searching for all our lives.
